This is why and how you should reflect on your past year
Many of us see 2018 as a collection of failures. All the things we said we would do but didn’t. All the things we thought we’d achieve but didn’t. All the things we imagined would be different one year from New Year’s 2018.
We feel like we totally failed ourselves. We failed our opportunities. We failed our future successful self. Or did we?
The first thing I teach my clients is that EVERY.SINGLE.DAY is a new beginning. They learn to let go of the past and to forgive themselves for the things they THINK they did wrong.
Because what makes most people quit, is the feeling that they „won’t make it anyway“ or that they’ve „failed so many times, what’s the point in trying again?“.
And so making a cut and a fresh start every day prevents you from thinking that way. It prevents you from giving up.
So today I want to show you how to review your year in a way that encourages you, instead of leaving you feeling hopeless.
WHAT WENT WRONG IN 2018?
That is exactly the question we should NOT be asking ourselves. Because nothing went wrong. It just didn’t go the way you wanted it to go in the beginning. But that can have a ton of reasons. And it doesn’t mean that the way it went is WRONG.
Why can there be just RIGHT or WRONG?
If RIGHT means that we achieve all of the resolutions we set for ourselves, than the chances that anyone ever has a year gone RIGHT are almost zero!!
Every single person, successful or not, happy or not, focused or not, experiences deviations and setbacks. That doesn’t mean they can’t correct the course and move on anyways.
So the first thing I want you to do is forget about WRONG! 2018 went absolutely the way it was supposed to go. Because you are YOU now because of all that happened in 2018!
WHAT FAILURES DID I LEARN FROM THE MOST?
Now it’s time to look more closely on the experiences you’d call failures. You should know by now that we don’t call them that here anymore, but for this exercise it doesn’t matter how you call them. The important thing is how you felt going through them.
So write down all the things you think didn’t go well. What were the most hurtful, disappointing and frustrating experiences?
And what did you learn from them? This is the crucial part. Is there anything you can do to not let this happen again? If so, write those things down!
WHAT DID GO WELL?
It’s time to look at what went really good in 2018. No matter if it’s an accomplishment or a lucky incident. You might not even think you had anything to do with it. Just write those things down.
You know what I’m writing down: That I was let go of my job last summer. Yeah, you heard right. I think that was an amazing thing for me! Because it brought me back to what I wanted to do. What I really am on this earth to do. And I had nothing to do with it. It just happened to me. And yet it’s a win!!
Your turn: write down all the good things that happened. Self-induced or not.
HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT LIFE?
Now to the most important part of this reflection. How did you feel about the most important areas of your life? Because Having to review a whole life without breaking it down can be quite overwhelming. So I made you a list of 12 areas to get you organized in your head. You can find it inside my Resource Library.
Or you can just take out your favorite journal and go crazy there. Write down, without judging about it, how you feel about each area of life. Feelings, fears, doubts, hopes, failures, wins, surprises… all.of.it!
And be completely honest. Don’t write down what you think others might think. Or what you think others would expect to read. No one is going to read this, unless you give them permission. So leave your ego aside and be raw! You can cry a little, I know I did! *wink*
HOW DO YOU WANT TO FEEL ABOUT LIFE?
Ok, you might think that the reflection work is done, but it’s not. You need to do one more step! Now that you’ve written down how you felt in 2018, the raw truth, the beautiful and the ugly, the next step is to write down how you WANT to feel in 2019.
We’re always so good at writing down goals or resolutions, but when it comes to writing down how we actually want to feel about certain things in life, we have a huge question mark over our head.
But isn’t this the reason we make goals in the first place? Because we hope that those goals, once accomplished, are going to make us feel a certain way? Well today is your chance to write those feelings down FIRST, so you can then set some goals or just adjust your habits in 2019!
If you take anything away from today’s post, I hope it’s the feeling that giving up is not an option. That failure is not a reason to quit, but to just adjust the plan. You’ve come a long way, even if you don’t realize it yet.
And that reflection should be concluded with knowing how you felt last year and how you WANT to feel this coming year! Cause in the end, our focus should always be the future!
