How to transform your life by transforming your home
We spend most of our time at home. How come we treat it like someone else’s place or even worse - a trash can?
Here’s what I’ve found looking inside the homes of people. It’s an accumulation of convenient findings mixed up with leftovers from other homes on top of things we THINK we should be owning!
And you know what the worst thing is? We hate taking care of our space! Cleaning our space is nothing more than something we HAVE to do. I’ll tell you what our home SHOULD be like:
Our home should be our TEMPLE! A place that reflects our personality and our dreams for the future! A place that’s dripping in good vibes and that leaves space for us to breath, to envision and to hope!
You come home and every room shouts out your BEST SELF! There’s pictures of your big dreams on the wall. The kitchen is full of healthy foods. Your gym bag is right at your doorstep so that you only need to pick it up on the way to the gym. Your desk has a great background ready to shoot some masterclasses any time (for those of you wanting to be a coach). And you have a meditation lounge set up in your living room.
Of course you can adjust all these images to match whatever goals you have set for yourself. It’s YOUR daydream after all.
Now if you’re anything like me, you’ll get overwhelmed by not knowing where to start. How would I know what I want my home to look like? How would I know if I want a meditation lounge or a fitness mat at home?
Well, that's what I’m here for: I’m going to tell you all the steps you need.
GET A CLEAR VISION
You need to KNOW what you WANT to bring it to your home, right? That’s why you need to get to know yourself. And so you need to get used to reflect on your dreams. Find out your big goals in life:
Where do you want to be 1, 3 or 5 years from now?
What do you want to have accomplished in your life?
How do you want to spend your day-to-day?
What does your dream life look like?
You can make this in your mind, but I’ve found that everything works better once you write it down. So journaling is a main part of my coaching. Get a notebook and a pen out and write it all down! Go crazy! Don’t let any old beliefs hold you back.
Let’s say anything is possible: what would your life look like?
Our homes are full of our past! While some memories (like pictures) are great reminders of the good things that are in our lives, most of the stuff we own is there because we THINK we might need it sometime. What kind of premise is that?
Who of you has more than 1 umbrella? Yep, I thought so!
Who here has a junk drawer in the kitchen? Yep, caught again!
So step number two is getting rid of ALL THE JUNK! And I love to follow the Marie Kondo rule:
You take everything you own into your hands - if it’s not functional or does not spark joy - it needs to go. If it doesn’t reflect who you want to be - it needs to go.
It’s ok if you can’t let go of it completely. Put it in a box and store it in your garage for a year: if you didn’t miss it until then - get rid of it!
EXTRA TIP: This exercise of making space can be a great help when trying to make habits stick! If you want to fuel your body with healthier foods, but your fridge is full of junk food, you’ll be more likely to have a step-back! If you want to know more about habits, read this following article:
GIVE EVERY ROOM AN INTENTION AND A MOOD
I have a so-called home book. That’s where I put in the details of every room.
Measurements, colors of the walls, things I own for it, etc.
Kind of like an interior designer needs all the information to get a room transformed. Little hint: Your garden or balcony should be treated like an extra room. Also your attic, your basement or your garage. Otherwise, they get filled up with all the junk you declutter from your other rooms. They are as important as any other room in your home.
Now I want you to go pick up a notebook or a binder and put in 1 sheet of paper for every room in it. Then you’ll write down the following things:
What intentions do I have for this room?
What dreams can I connect to it?
What mood do I want it to reflect?
And on the other side of the sheet, you’ll make a quick outline of the room with all the measurements. Also the position of your windows and doors. Plus your fixed furniture (the things that MUST go in there - for example, a bed in the bedroom or a desk in the office).
NO: you don’t need to be a talented illustrator or an architect for this exercise. The emphasis is on the intentions you have for this room and what you want to feel when you get in there. This is not about perfection - it’s about clarity!
Example: Let’s say one of your big goals is to grow your own food. It's kind of obvious that this dream can and is connected to your kitchen space, your garden or balcony. What else do you need to make this dream come true? An extra binder for all the information on how to grow your own food? A potting station? Some extra space in your basement for topsoil? A herb garden on your kitchen wall? Get creative!
Now decide what mood you want to have when you enter the kitchen/garden/balcony. How about a connection to nature? Or simply GROWTH? The feeling of being well-nurtured? Of fresh energy?
You get the idea.
HELLO VISION BOARDS
Now that you’ve made space and got clear on what your big goals are and what rooms you have in mind for it, it’s time to get clear on the changes you want to make in every room. This is where a vision board comes in handy. This is the place for your visual inspiration. It could be a Pinterest Board as well.
The most important thing is this: don’t think about the money you have to spare NOW for these projects. We are not setting a budget right now. And we’re not saying you need to make those changes right away. We’re getting clear on what you want your home to feel and look. It doesn’t mean it needs to be done tomorrow!
This is supposed to be the fun part. The one where you let your imagination run wild and possibilities are endless. The one where you create the home of your dreams on paper...and then decide what to change. And that change can be slow but steady.
I used to go through home magazines and collect clippings for every room. No matter how you do it, on paper or online, you should feel your creativity go wild and your good vibes become stronger.
START THE CHANGE - ONE STEP AT A TIME
All planning should stop at one point and give room to the actual DO-PHASE. And as I said, the change can be slow but steady. The important thing is that you get started.
Here’s what’s going to happen once your home starts looking and especially feeling the way you want it to:
Your home is going to talk to you in a very powerful way.
It’s going to show you all the goals you’re going to achieve with time.
It’s going to remind you every day of the person you WANT to be.
It won’t be a faded memory of your past self but more of a suggestion of what’s actually inside of you. The power you have, the dreams you have in front of you.
TAKE CARE OF IT
This is one important thing I want to make sure you understand. You should start to take proper care of your home. Cleaning and tidying up should be an honor instead of a chore.
Your home is the place where you spend the most time in. It shouldn’t be too much to clean it. One small area each day. That way it won’t pile up and you’ll feel like you have everything under control. The moments where our laundry gets out of hand, that’s the moments we give up. But if we do half an hour daily it feels doable.
There are a few websites out there that make it really easy for us to follow a cleaning schedule. For example https://www.cleanmama.net/.
She has a weekly routine that makes the home clean feel like a breeze. And she gives out a cleaning schedule each month. You should go check it out and start making your home chores more attractive.
Well, that's it for today! Now tell me one thing: what room are you getting started with TO-DAY?? Are you as excited as I am? You know, I keep transforming my home each and every day! As we grow & develop, our goals and dream do, too! And so we need to adjust our temples/homes to it!
Alright, now get going and start your home book right away!! HAVE FUN!
And have an incredibly good day!
